I wrote this a while ago for another blog, but I felt it’s just as relevant now, if not more so. We’re all banging on about freedom of speech, freedom of movement, how “mah freedum’s” being constrained by government, or even in the case of the outgoing president of the USA, by Big Tech…
How much freedom do you think you have?
By that I mean, if you woke up tomorrow morning, and decided to go to the beach, how easily could you do that? Would you be able to blow off work, or school, or family commitments and just do what the hell you want to do?
When we’re younger, we always think that we’re so tied down and that when we become adults we’ll be able to do what we want. In reality, as we get older, we realise we have to have commitments to work if we want to be able to afford things like houses, cars and holidays. And then when we start relationships there’s another level of commitment, even more so when you have children.
Money doesn’t even absolve you of these responsibilities. If you won £20 million on the lottery, you’d still have certain obligations, like getting the kids to school on time. Yes, you could employ staff to do these things for you, but then you’re just switching one set of responsibilities for another.
I suppose the time in my life I felt the most free was at university. Thankfully I went at a time when there were no tuition fees, I received a grant from the government and my parents helped support me. I only had 8 hours of lectures a week and apart from the odd essay not much else to do!
What about you, when were you the most free to do what you want?
